Freediving at Camp Cove

Freediving is basically advanced snorkeling. It’s not about who can hold their breath the longest, or who can go the deepest. It’s just another way to enjoy exploring the underwater world, without the hassle and expense of organising scuba equipment to take with you.

We’d like to open this outing up to people from the Underwater Club as well as underwater rugby, and to those who are inexperienced at freediving as much as to those who are.

So come along for a great day in the warm water. Bring wetsuits, weightbelts, mask, snorkels and fins.

Please RSVP by replying to this email or on facebook http://www.facebook.com/events/357824254275500/

Meet 10am at Camp Cove carpark http://maps.google.com.au/maps/ms?msid=216250067667611921847.0004bf1f9a361b96a23d7&msa=0&ll=-33.839267%2C151.28022&spn=0.001796%2C0.003455 and the contact numbers for the day are 0414 656 068 (Bobby) and 0407 106 129 (Anthony).

p.s. no spearguns to this event please.

Underwater Rugby in the Ocean

Basically what we do in the pool, but in the sea with the fishes and stingrays for an audience!

The water should be warm but please bring your wetsuits and rash shirts (and weight belts too) in case.

This will also be at Camp Cove and will take place shortly after the Freediving event. Please try and meet on the beach at 12:00pm.

You can RSVP here on the facebook page if you haven’t already http://www.facebook.com/events/362757350438387/

As both Anthony and Bobby will be in the water freediving before UWR, we will not be able to answer our phones.

Look forward to seeing you all there! Fingers crossed for good visibility and sunshine :)

Training Tonight Canceled

Sorry for the late notice, but we only just got confirmation this morning that waterpolo has double-booked the pool for tonight.

I know many of you may feel angered by this, but I would discourage any vigilante activities such as peeing in the pool and/or streaking. We are better than that, right?

TEAM PINGU, BEACHED AZ and the GAY NURSE SHARKS

Training tonight may be canceled but our regular Sunday competition surely won’t be. We encourage everyone who hasn’t played underwater rugby in the deep pool to come and try it out. We’ll mix new players into one of the above teams with experienced players and guarantee you’ll have a great time (how could you not with names like these!). Shoot us an email back if you’re interested in coming along this Sunday, or at a future date.

Sharkwater Film Screening tomorrow night

We’re showing a screening of the film “Sharkwater” tomorrow night on
campus, it has great footage of some of the best shark sites around
the world. It’ll be on in the upstairs meeting room of the Sam
Cracknell building, at 7:30pm.

Please RSVP here on the Facebook page or just send us an email.

The screening is also to raise awareness about the issue of shark finning.

Underwater Rugby:  The sport everyone can play!

We hope you agree with us that this is really a sport that everyone can play. So continue to help us spread the word by telling your friends, showing them on facebook and bringing them to training on Wednesday evenings!

Come join our internal Competition

Over the next five weeks we will be hosting a friendly internal competition (between four teams) every Sunday! It is called the Crittenden Cup and we are still looking for new members to help us fill out positions in some of the teams. If you’ve already played with us on Wednesdays, then this is the next step! Please let us know as soon as possible if you’re interested.

Positions explained!

If you’ve ever been confused during a game about where you’re meant to be, and what you’re meant to be doing (and it wasn’t due to oxygen deprivation) then this is the perfect piece of light reading for you. Don’t worry, it also includes a video at the end!

Guide to buying your own equipment

While we do our best to make as much spare equipment available for trainings, we can’t always guarantee there will be enough for everybody (or that the sizes will fit!). So if you are considering buying your own equipment then here’s a very quick guide.

Masks and Snorkels:
Any of the ones on this site will be perfect. This is a Canadian website which does free international shipping ($5US postage and handling) and they specialise in stocking underwater hockey and underwater rugby equipment for the lowest prices that any of us can find. But if you prefer to shop elsewhere, pointers to follow are to try and buy a mask with 1. two pieces of tempered glass lens (or plastic); 2. good angle of visibility; 3. low volume and low profile (i.e. it sits close to your face and isn’t too bulky). And for snorkels, a simple J-snorkel is best (i.e. without the extra purger that many of them now come with).

Fins:
Any closed-heel or full-foot fins (strapless) with blunt edges, medium stiffness and a tough construction (rubber, or plastic without too many fancy holes and other bits). Rubber swimming fins are suitable, but try to avoid bulky SCUBA diving fins with the adjustable straps. These Mares Avanti Tre fins are very popular for UWR and are currently on special from an Australian webstore. Shipping should be around $10.

Crittenden Cup – Week 1 recap

The teams were closely matched over all three games last Sunday, with two games tied and one upset (Team 2 defeating Team 1 by a four goals to one victory). You can find the results documented here.

Video footage of the games have also been uploaded onto youtube and facebook. So go ahead and analyze the games in preparation for your next match!

Also a big congratulations to all those players who played with us in a deep pool for the first time!

Deep pool session today

You heard it folks…

So it has come to this… the Sunday session for this afternoon has been cancelled do to inclement confirmations.

I know a lot of you were intending on coming anyway, but it’s super important that you remember to RSVP on the facebook page (or by emailing us if you don’t have FB) in the future because that’s the only way we have an idea of numbers.

We’ve been having jam packed sessions on Wednesdays, and solid deep pool sessions recently, so it’s a shame if we have to cancel just because we forget to confirm attendance :(

But on the bright side…

We have a new representative on the Underwater Club committee!

Tanya “Pull-your-pants-down” Lippman will be filling the first Underwater Rugby position on the UWC Committee. This will help us maintain better communication with the broader Underwater Club of which we are a part of, and ensure underwater rugby is properly considered and represented in all decisions of the Club. Put your hands together for Tanya!

Dam-busting Fun this Sunday!

Extra Splashy SplAshfield

Yes, Underwater Rugby players are tougher than Warragamba Dam.

We won’t be spilling over. We won’t be evacuating. And most of all, we won’t even breathe while we’re not doing those things.

Just don’t forget to bring 40 cents for the shower afterwards…

3:30pm for 4:00pm splash-off. Please don’t forget to RSVP on the Facebook page so we know numbers (!!!!!)

Competition Signup

This will be the first ever competition of its kind for underwater rugby in Australia. We think this will inject some extra fun and friendly competition into deep pool sessions. So we’re hoping to have enough people sign up for at least 3-4 teams. Steph has spent a lot of effort giving birth to and nourishing this idea. You wouldn’t NOT pay your CHILD SUPPORT, so don’t be a dead-beat parent. Throw your support behind this little baby comp!

Membership reminder

Last reminder to sign up for Underwater Club membership before prices go up tomorrow. You can do this all online.

Membership Renewal

Don’t forget to renew your membership to the Underwater Club before the end of this week!

Membership with the UWC provides us with insurance coverage for underwater rugby, as well as giving you access to all the perks of being in the Underwater Club. Perks include:  affordable SCUBA gear hire, discounted deals for SCUBA courses (PADI), access to UWC dives and events.

Current rates (until 3rd March) are $20 for students, $50 for non-students (including UNSW staff). There is also the option for a $20 UWR only membership, for non-students who only want to do underwater rugby.

These rates will go up to $30 for students and $100 for non-students after March 3, so don’t forget to get in ASAP.

Footy Show FAME: last call

Last call for shaved chests and hairy legs on Tuesday night’s filming for the Footy Show.

RSVP here if you haven’t already.

AGM

Please try and make it to the Underwater Club AGM this coming Wednesday 29th Feb (6:30pm). Elections at this meeting may have a big impact on the future of underwater rugby, and it’s important that we are active in the broader Underwater Club of which we are a part of.

The venue is the Sam Cracknell Pavillion. There will be a bbq and cheap drinks (both ideal before training at 8:15pm).

Training Schedule

Due to the Tuesday filming for the Footy Show, there will be no deep pool session this Sunday at Ashfield. However, next Sunday 4th March is booked in.

Please see the events calendar on our homepage for all scheduled bookings up until the end of April.
